Under the Fig Tree
Meditation by Levente Horváth
Thomas wanted to see the Resurrected One with his own eyes, and Jesus allowed him, because He was not yet ascended into Heaven. "Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed." (John 2o, 29) But since we cannot get this chance anymore of seeing Jesus and so believe, we still can get the chance of what Nathanael could get: "Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these." (John 1, 47-51) – which means not seeing Jesus but being seen by Jesus can also make us to believe.
By the way, may I ask you: could Jesus see you this morning under the fig tree? Could the Lord see you reading your Bible and seeing you searching his face? I am not supposing that you did not have your daily reading in the Scriptures, but I am asking if you were searching Him as well? As thirsty and desperate as the terminally ill addict of whom the psychologist stated: “now he seeks to know Christ and I do think this is genuine.” (see the story) Or are you searching the Lord’s countenance as the orphan Peti in one of our stories from the summer camps who played a bird and asked the animals of the forest to find his mother for him? (see the story) Nathanael was of that kind. He wanted to ascend, like a bird to the realms of heaven. But he was cynical and resigned in even hoping that anything good could ever came from Nazareth. A typical unbeliever.
You will see greater things than these, Jesus told him, you will see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man, if you believe in Me, then the angels will start ascending from Me and together with Me you can also ascend in heaven where you could not ascend by yourself alone, the more you tried the less you could. Look, the angels can have both ways with Me. They can also descend from heaven on the Son of Man. There is a both ways communication assured there with the Son.
Yesterday I met somebody who was asked to visit a lady who was terminally ill of cancer. He first was afraid, but suddenly he started to rejoice, because he was for many days before desperate to meet Jesus afresh and searched him, though felt like not being able to find Him. Then, suddenly he realized Jesus talked about expecting us to meet Him in the sick: 'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.' My friend told me: “What a privilege, I could meet Jesus there, and I could believe again afresh!” Well, I could see the descending angels on him as he walked away with his Master, yes, he was a believing Nathanael seen by Jesus when visiting the sick and now seeing greater things by faith.
