Summary of the year
We will soon end a year with little change. The Therapy Centre has helped an increasing number of people this year, having had a full house since autumn. We could only organize four treatment camps instead of the five in 2007. We had the same number of children’s camps, aftercare conferences and other camps as before. Counseling work, public awareness and staff training went on well. We had an extremely hard first quarter: the constant lack of funds beginning last fall was not diminishing. Delay and uncertainty of payments increased the feeling of insecurity for the staff. Since April, however, funds have arrived on time. A certain amount of uncertainty continues, since we never have a reserve of more than two months. As time went on and enthusiasm passed away the pressures of everyday work and lack of (at least) financial safety took its toll on the staff. Sure there were ways to manage that, but there is not always agreement on the way to handle crisis. So it is a huge task to eat and digest the differences and get out relatively unharmed or less harmed. There is an old saying in any TC (Therapeutic Community), namely, "what goes around, comes around" (in the sense that hidden tensions will ultimately reveal themselves — sometimes in unexpected ways!). So I am expecting a lot of change and also to see how the TC will react to the perceived tensions. Basically I don't think it is bad or damaging. I do think honesty and genuineness play a part and things will take a good course if they are maintained." In many ways, we perceive the achievements of this year as a miracle and an incredible gift of God. Also on the financial side: since grant possibilities became scarce, government subsidy is growing very slowly, and the dairy farm hasn’t given a reasonable profit yet, this year’s work could not have happened if the amount of donations we received from you hadn’t increased.
