Fear and Love

Meditation by Dr. Levente Horváth

It is not without reason that we fear exposure. This human life is often very cruel. The world around us can be extremely cruel. Rather than trying to protect each other or make one another feel safe, people tend to rip off whatever clothes are left with gossip and blame. People leave each other naked and exposed rather than lovingly covering one another.

The curse of Noah is in the air. One night, when Noah got drunk and danced about his tent, one son mocked him and exposed him even more in his shame. This son, Noah cursed. However, his other sons walked backwards into his tent so as not to see their naked father and covered him with a blanket. These sons, Noah blessed because they tried to cover his shame.

When someone covers you with care and tact rather than exposing you, this is what you really call love. We can bless those people who have done so with us, just as Noah blessed his sons. Because this type of love is so rare, we must value it that much more. It is whenever someone has cared for us in this way, that we have beheld the concept of true love. I think that we can all agree that it is a basic human desire that we wish our nakedness, when it is exposed, to be covered. Similarly, we also feel that the greatest thing in life is the experience of love. Here, I am not talking about an abstract concept of love. I am talking about a very concrete thing. Love cannot be planned, it cannot be practiced in advance, it either happens or it does not. The fact that love can happen in such a cruel world as ours is always a miracle.
