The inward thought and the heart of everyone is deep (Psalm 64)
Meditation by Dr. Levente Horváth, November 2010

David is asking for protection and a safe hiding place (v. 2) from those who shoot in secret places at the good soul (v. 5 They say, "Who will see them?"). At the same time, he is realistic: he asks protection not only from the enemy but also from the fear of the enemy (v. 1). He summarizes his realization: “the inward thought and the heart of every one is deep” (v. 6b)

Today, I can also realize that our real enemy is the many inscrutable and evil inclinations which are hidden in the soul and in the heart. Therefore, if sin remains concealed in a man’s soul, then it is a fearful -- and at the same time invincible -- enemy. Then he realizes: he is defenseless and yearns for being hidden in God (“hide me” v. 2) from the Evil which is also hiding in the heart and secretly attacks from there. “But God will shoot at them; with an arrow suddenly shall they be wounded” (v. 7) the Son, the Crucified, the Arrow of God, who hit the Evil one directly, while the Evil one and death had thought: they nailed Him to the cross of death and judgment. If believers will be able to see this, then they “shall wisely consider of His doing” (v. 9), they will reveal their own sins by the Holy Spirit. That is to say, they assume transparency (“And all the upright in heart shall glory"), thus they “shall be glad in Jehovah, and shall take refuge in him” (v. 10), because they can trust that “your life is hid with Christ in God” (Col. 3:3).

Psalm 64
For the Chief Musician. A Psalm. A song of David.

1. Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint: Preserve my life from fear of the enemy.
2. Hide me from the secret counsel of evil-doers, From the tumult of the workers of iniquity;
3. Who have whet their tongue like a sword, And have aimed their arrows, even bitter words,
4. That they may shoot in secret places at the perfect: Suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not.
5. They encourage themselves in an evil purpose; They talk of laying snares privily; They say, Who will see them?
6. They search out iniquities; We have accomplished, `say they', a diligent search: And the inward thought and the heart of every one is deep.
7. But God will shoot at them; With an arrow suddenly shall they be wounded.
8. So they shall be made to stumble, their own tongue being against them: All that see them shall wag the head.
9. And all men shall fear; And they shall declare the work of God, And shall wisely consider of his doing.
10. The righteous shall be glad in Jehovah, and shall take refuge in him; And all the upright in heart shall glory.
