Volunteers from China
Widening borders
July 4-10, 2010
Last year only one person came from Hong Kong. We were joking with Levente Horváth (the President of the Foundation) that for this year we would come with a whole group from Hong Kong. This year I was the only one from Hungary, the others… God’s ways are inscrutable indeed. We told about our experiences from 2009 to some friends and they felt like coming and they did. This year we had a five-member-group: Fion, Joanna, Phoebe, Vivian (my wife) and me.
It was very nice to be in Ozd again. I have come here many times, still each year there is something new, a little bit different. It was encouraging to see the finished shed, the base of which was dug and filled with concrete last year by our team. It was encouraging mainly for the girls, because a few meters away the new job was waiting for us: to complete the semi-finished hen-rabbit-pig sty combination. It looked like an impossible idea at the beginning, but with the help of Brendon Wheeler’s proper suggestions little by little we got the hang of the work. We found the sawing and nailing maybe the most enjoyable part.
The weather was cloudy all week long and it rained almost every day. But after two days it did not bother us anymore because we had put the tiles on the roof. On one of those days the first inhabitants of the sty arrived, two piglets, who were stimulating us with their persistent grunting to continue the work. We separated the chicken-rabbit section with grating, made egg-laying boxes, then we made compartments for the rabbits. Joanna told us that her father made the furniture at their home and that previously she and her mother always criticized him by saying “this was not good, that was a little bit crooked” and so on. Now she realized that it was not at all simple to saw even a piece of board straight. “I appreciate his work much more now.” she told us. Who would think that the intimate disharmony of a family from Hong Kong could be dissolved a few thousands kilometers from home in a little hidden Hungarian village? The Good Father thought so, blessed be His name.
We stayed in the Rehab again and we enjoyed the comfort of the Centre and the love of the residents. It was a particularly nice gesture that the presentation of the House was in English, in this way everybody understood everything very well. Besides, Lorraine (Brendon Wheeler’s wife) and her mother – who was on a visit in Ozd just then – could also attend the presentation.
We had our meals in the Foundation’s house in the village. Herewith we would like to thank Ilus neni for the tasty food she made, which was new and special for Hong Kong stomaches and everybody, without exception, liked it very much.
Friday we had nice sunny weather, so we could take a walk on the nearby hillsides with the Wheeler family. We are happy for the time spent together with them in both work and leisure, and we wish God’s blessing on their life, as they go back to New Zealand at the end of this year. At the same time, we pray that God would appoint a suitable person or family in their place in Ozd.
Saturday morning we said good-by, filled and enriched with many experiences. And although we weren’t joking with Levente this year, we plan to come back with a Hong Kong group for the next year too.
