The Dairy Farm
The farm was originally established on the Ozd castle property with three purposes in mind:
- to provide additional source of income to
support our ministry
- to provide a source of activities as work therapy
for those in therapy projects
- for community development purposes in Ozd and surroundings -
to serve as a role model dairy farm (most typical farming situations in Romania
were highly fragmented and inefficient)
With a herd of over 70 Holstein cattle the farm runs as a registered business called Betalef Ltd. (This name comes from Hebrew combining “bet” meaning house and “alef” meaning cow.) Corn, barley and alfalfa to feed the cattle grow on our own fields as well as leased fields.
Planning for the farm started in 2002, based on the existing lands and the stables which were in need of renovation.
Development begin in April 2003 with the reparation of the stables.
Almost all of the work was carried out by BPF workers and international volunteer work teams with the help of generous donations.
In September 2003 BPF bought their first cows:
twelve Holsteins from the Netherlands. Another fourteen arrived two years later. These animals and their descendants represent the current herd.
Four volunteer farmer families - from Canada and New Zealand -
assisted with establishing, running and developing the farm until December 2006.
One of these families, Martin and Debbie Douma from Canada, together with their three young daughters lived almost three years at Ozd.
During this time, the farm became a functional unit including the milking system and feed grow. Most agricultural and milking equipment
was also purchased in this period.
After 2006, a second barn, a manure pit and a silage store were built, also with the help of international volunteer workteams. However, the farm still needs
development and its profitability is still set back by a number of problems (problems related to attitude to work,
requirements by European Union regulations, hardships in finding/buying proper agricultural land, red tape and unpredictability of the economical environment.)
