Volunteers from Hungary
To Live and Not Only to Survive
Report of the work team from Budapest
Team leader: Balázs Somogyi
8-13 August 2011, Ozd
Recently I am thankful to God for a journey to Transylvania. We helped in Ozd, in the Drug Therapy Centre of the Bonus Pastor Foundation and in the renovation of the Castle. Of course, we helped as much as we could even though we are not very competent in this field... J We joined the residents of the Centre during the evenings to have devotions with them, then we played music and had discussions. I became very fond of the people there. They were so different, especially in being so honest. There was no idle talk beside the point, as I often experience elsewhere, unfortunately even among my friends. These people accepted us and opened up for us, even though they knew that we would leave after one week. And anyway they had life stories which could not be easily admitted and told to others. That meant a lot to me. I felt that I wanted to spend every moment with them if it meant so much to them that we were there. It was so good to be together with them.
The other thing was the atmosphere--the peace--we didn’t have to hurry anywhere. We didn’t need the Internet or telephone, because we were enough for each other. For a little while it was as if this selfish, always rushing world did not exist for me for one week and I enjoyed it very much. I’ve been longing to go back since then. There I realized that it is possible to live in peace, honestly and openly, regardless of the circumstances. To live and not only to survive.
As a closing phrase, as was used at the end of a report or statement in the Centre: Thanks!
